Current Year 11 GCSE French – Cohort 2016 – 2017

At the Polesworth School, studying a language is compulsory at GCSE.  Therefore you will continue studying the language you started with when you joined the school in Year 7 as part of your core curriculum.

The German and French GCSE choices in the option column is for students who wish to pick up a second language from scratch and prepare for the GCSE exam.

The content and assessment are identical for French and German.

New GCSE Specification from Year 9 (to be tested for the first time in 2018)

What has changed?

  • Students must sit all GCSE French and German exam papers at either Higher (grades 4-9) or Foundation Tier (grades 1-5).
  • There is no more Controlled Assessment; all exams are linear (sat at the end of the course in Year 11).
  • Each skill is worth 25% of the final GCSE grade.
  • Translation Tasks on both the Reading and Writing papers.
  • Questions in the target language (French or German).
  • Students study all of the following themes on which the assessments are based.

Theme 1: Identity and culture
Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest
Theme 3: Current and future study and employment

The new GCSE course outline

Paper 1 Listening
(25%)

  • Foundation Tier – 35 minutes
  • Higher Tier – 45 minutes
  • Section A  – all  questions and answers in English
  • Section B – all questions and answers in the target language (French or German)

Paper 2 Speaking
(25%)

  • Foundation Tier – 7 – 9 minutes.
  • Higher Tier – 10 – 12 minutes.
  • Part 1 – Role Play Task.
  • Part 2 – Photocard Task.
  • Part 3 – General Conversation.

Paper 3 Reading (25%)

  • Foundation Tier – 1 hour.
  • Higher Tier – 45 minutes.
  • Part A – all questions will be in English.
  • Part B – all questions will be in the target language (French or German).
  • Part C –  translation task from the target language (French or German) into English.

Paper 4 Writing
(25%)

  • Foundation Tier  – one hour.
  • Higher Tier – one hour 15 minutes.
  • Foundation Tier:

Q1. Pupils must write 4 sentences in response to a photo.
Q2. Writing passage task.
Q3. Translation from English into the target language (French and German).
Q4. Pupils must complete a structured writing task and respond to 4 bullet points in 90 words.

  • Higher Tier:

Q1. Pupils must complete a structured writing task and respond to 4 bullet points in 90 words.
Q2. Pupils must complete an open-ended writing task.
Q3. Translation task from English into the target language (French and German).
