As part of Community Academies Trust, both The Polesworth School and The Wilnecote School are committed to creating opportunities for those wishing to follow apprenticeship programmes to enter the school workplace.

As national and local apprenticeship schemes develop, we anticipate that a widening range of opportunities will exist.  Our current vacancies are detailed below.  Future opportunities may exist at both schools and in our central Trust support team, based in Tamworth.

Apprentice Science Technician – Community Academies Trust

Under the guidance of a Senior Technician, you will provide a technician support service to teachers and students, meeting health & safety standards and the requirements of the school. Duties will include preparation of work for classes, manual processing of hazardous substances along with clearing classrooms after practical exercises.

Annual wage : £9,218.40 

Working week : 

Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm term time only It is anticipated that the Apprenticeship will be conducted over a minimum of 18 months to accommodate the term time only factor.

Total hours per week: 37.00

Duties to Include : 

  • Issue and deliver equipment, materials, teaching aids and organisms to rooms.
  • Collect, check and return resources to stores.
  • Maintain resources, including routine repairs.
  • General cleaning of laboratory bench surfaces and fixed equipment, cleaning laboratory sinks and used equipment.
  • Disposal of waste materials appropriately.

Assist in:

  • The preparation of solutions, materials, cultures for living organisms.
  • Assembling /setting up apparatus.
  • Obtaining materials.
  • Trialling practical activities and with practical demonstrations.
  • Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities.
  • Constructing and modifying apparatus.
  • Caring for plants and animals.
  • Stock taking and re-ordering equipment or consumables.
  • Organising and storing resources.
  • General clerical duties, e.g. photocopying.

Apprenticeship duration: 18 months

Apprentice ICT Technician – Community Academies Trust

Do you love fixing computers and finding out how they work? Do you enjoy providing a high standard of customer service as well as keeping up to date with the latest technology? How would you like to turn this into a career? With this apprenticeship you will have exposure and training on all aspects of IT hardware.

Weekly wage : £129.50

Working week : 

Monday – Friday. Term-time only plus 3 weeks

Total hours per week: 37.00

Duties to Include: 

  • Assist with setting up of IT/ICT equipment
  • Maintenance or simple repair of IT equipment/apparatus where within the competence of the postholder or liaise with suppliers or companies for repairs.
  • Image PCs and Laptops and install
  • Install software, evaluate new and existing software
  • Provide basic training in /instruction on software
  • Provide ‘on-call’ assistance  to resolve curriculum based faults/problems where possible
  • Maintain and update asset register / stock records for ICT equipment
  • Issue ICT equipment
  • Issue and record digital cameras
  • Promote the use of ICT within the school
  • Assist with IT participation in the classroom, library and IT suites
  • Assist with IT design/DTP as required, e.g. for school awards, publicity, displays
  • Contribute to the design, development and maintenance of specialist  IT resources
    (e.g. school website or other IT based school resource )
  • Password administration on the school network.
  • Assist in the User administration of the school Office365 tenancy.
  • Creation of teaching materials.
  • Ensure that ICT rooms run effectively and are secure and tidy.
  • Together with other ICT support staff, monitor  Child Protection software and liaise with senior staff should any issues arise.
  • Provide cover for other ICT suites in the case of absence.
  • Supervise ICT suite at agreed lunchtimes, and after school for course work and clubs.

Apprenticeship duration: 12 months

 Apprentice Assistant Caretaker – Community Academies Trust

To undertake a range of duties under the direction of the Assistant School Business Manager for the care, cleanliness, safety and security of the site

Annual wage : £10,811.00

Working week : 

37 hours per week, worked flexibly between Monday to Friday 6am to 7pm. Some weekend work may be required by prior arrangement. Full year employment, apprenticeship programme over 12 months.

Total hours per week: 37.00

Duties to Include: 

Responsible to the Site Supervisor for the care, cleanliness and security of the school site.  Based mainly at The Polesworth School, but part of a wider team across the North Warwickshire CAT School hub.

Security:

  • Routine and non-routine opening and closing and security of premises and grounds (although closing & emergency reaction will be undertaken by an external contractor).
  • Assist in carrying out security procedures for the school buildings and grounds
  • Assisting in prevention of trespass on the premises
  • Assist to ensure unauthorised parking of vehicles does not occur.

Cleaning:

  • Monitoring of work to cleaners
  • Checking work is of standard required
  • Carry out cleaning of own designated area to the required standard, where applicable
  • Stripping and retreating floors when necessary

Safety:

  • Checking safety of site and ensuring the removal and safe disposal of hazards

Maintenance:

  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of basic tools and equipment
  • Carry out minor or temporary maintenance and repairs of building
  • Report items, repairs, maintenance work that is required and is beyond the competence of the caretaking staff
  • Report damage as appropriate
  • Boiler room maintenance
  • Direct contractors to sites of repair and maintenance work
  • Inspect work of contractors where a satisfaction note required.
  • Operate heating plant to maintain certain temperatures and ensure adequate supply of hot water available
  • Carry out frost precaution procedures and procedures in event of fire, flood, breaking and entering, accident or major damage
  • Ensure drains and gullies are inspected to ensure they are free flowing and clean, dealing with blockages as necessary
  • Ensure that caretaking and cleaning equipment is in a safe and working condition

Stock:

  • Receive delivery of stock, materials etc, ensuring appropriate storage and distribution.
  • Ensure adequate supply of fuel, light bulbs and janitorial materials are available and distribution.

Access:

  • Provide emergency access in the event of snow or minor flooding or similar emergency situations
  • Ensure playing areas and paths are free from litter

Other:

  • Move equipment, resources, furniture as required (e.g. for examinations)
  • Assist Site Supervisor in undertaking risk assessments and any other duties as directed.

Support for the school

  • Contribute to the School’s responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, work and mission statement of the school
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate within the grading of the post, including wider support and cover as requested for other colleagues within the wider team.
  • Positively contribute to the objectives and aims of Community Academies Trust

Design and Technology Technician – Community Academies Trust

Under the guidance of a Design Technology Technician and Head of Department, provide a technician support service to teachers and students, meeting health & safety standards and the requirements of the school.  Duties will include preparation of work for classes, manual handling and handling of hazardous substances and materials along with clearing classrooms after practical exercises.

Annual wage : £9,218.40

Working week : 

37 hours per week, Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm.  Term-time only (39 weeks per year).

Duties to Include: 

  • To provide a technician support service, meeting health and safety standards and the requirements of classes involved.
  • Provide for general care of technology classrooms
  • Maintain and provide for safe storage of stock (materials and equipment)
  • Assist teaching staff with practical lessons
  • Provide general clerical support and undertake basic record keeping as required

Apprenticeship duration: 12 months

Possible start date: 1st September 2017 or before according to role, but no later than 30th September 2017.

The Wilnecote School

Apprentice Site Technician – Community Academies Trust

To undertake a range of duties under the direction of the Assistant School Business Manager and Caretaker for the care, cleanliness, safety and security of the school site.

Annual wage : £10,811.00 

Working week : 

37 hours per week, worked flexibly between Monday to Friday 6am to 7pm. Some weekend work may be required by prior arrangement. Full year employment, apprenticeship programme over 12 months.

Total hours per week: 37.00

Duties to Include: 

Security and Safety

  • Unlock and secure premises at agreed times and maintain the key(s) in their possession for emergency call-out.
  • Check that the heating and lighting systems are operating satisfactorily and checking their efficiency with regard to energy conservation.
  • Check fire and/or security alarms are working satisfactorily.
  • Ensure that premises are in a safe, tidy and satisfactory condition prior to use. In the morning this will normally require attendance until a member of staff arrives.
  • Maintain vigilance for Health and Safety concerns in and around the building including checking outside area for syringes, broken glass etc. and disposing appropriately.

Maintenance and Cleaning

  • Dispose of such waste materials arising from the use of the premises as are not covered by alternative arrangements.
  • Replace such consumables on the premises in appropriate locations as are not covered by alternative arrangements, e.g. toilet rolls, soap, towels, etc.
  • Clean designated areas not covered by alternative arrangements, e.g. outside areas, car parks, drains, boiler house, stores etc. This may include cleaning up after contractors during school closure periods.
  • To arrange to clear blockages, remove foreign matter from sinks, toilets, drains, and clean up spillages as required.
  • In the event of a burst or leaking water pipe, the water supply should be turned off, spillage removed and furnishings cleaned.
  • Remove spillages and resultant stains from floors and other surfaces.
  • Carry out the removal of debris from gullies, drains etc. and that the school and ground are litter free. Litter bins are to be emptied and the contents disposed of on a daily basis.
  • Ensure clear and safe pedestrian access to the school particularly in adverse weather conditions (e.g. snow clearing, gritting).

Minor Repairs

  • Minor repairs to include minor plumbing, joinery, electrical work and internal decoration and maintenance, e.g. replacing door handles, replacing light bulbs/plugs with appropriate training.
  • Minor plant maintenance in accordance with agreed working practices, e.g. lubrication of heating pumps as appropriate.
  • Painting and Decorating
  • Temporary making good of colour wash, e.g. when cabinets are moved, and the blotting out of graffiti. Making good paint work e.g. touching up scratch damage. To undertake repairs, projects and redecoration tasks as appropriate.

Joinery

  • Minor repairs to fixtures and fittings such as replacing locks.
  • Minor repairs to furniture, replacing door and window catches.
  • Minor improvements such as the erection of small shelves, display and notice boards.

Plumbing

  • Unblocking sinks, traps and waste pipes. Adjustment and rewashering of taps. Stopping leaks.

Resources

  • General portage and collection activities as required including setting up and clearing away furniture.
  • To attend to, where necessary, personnel visiting the site such as contractors, representatives of utilities (gas, electric) and monitor any work being carried out within the postholder’s area of responsibility.
  • Attend to the replacement of paper towels, toilet rolls and soap in toilets and teaching areas, e.g. Technology, Science, Art and Craft.
