Assessment:

i) Two written papers based on student's knowledge and understanding of Food Technology

ii) Two individual coursework project, one to be completed in year 10 and one in year 11

Pupils will sit 2 written exam papers during the course, one 1 hour assessment and one 1 hour 15 minute assessment, each making up 20% of the pupil’s final grade.

It is important to note that all students will follow a common course during Year 10 and part of Year 11.

GCSE Options -Subjects - Food Technology


 

Coursework:

For coursework pupils will create 2 design folios both of which involve designing and making a new food product. Up to 20 hours will be spent on each project.

The use of ICT in coursework folios is encouraged.
Each piece of coursework is worth 30% of the overall result.

Content of the Course:

Students will learn about food safety, recipe development and industrial production of food as well as the nutritional values and functions of a variety of ingredients.  They will also analyse and evaluate existing products and learn about a range of materials including ‘Smart’ foods.

They will also focus on sustainable design in relation to Food products and develop their moral and cultural awareness.

Students will be expected to provide the ingredients for practical work. An enjoyment of food practical work is essential. 

Skills:

Students will learn how to:

i) design food products
ii) prepare, make and evaluate recipes 
iii) analyse products and the processes used to manufacture them
iv) improve ICT skills and learn about CAD and CAM.

For those interested there will be the chance to obtain a "Foundation Food Hygiene Certificate" which is very useful when working anywhere that produces or sells food.

Events

Janice Sanuse, a catering lecturer from Tamworth came in to demonstrate Caribbean and Asian cookery. 
 
 Three dishes were prepared : Caribbean Fried Chicken, Spicy Meat Parcels and Caribbean Fried Dumplings.  Students took part in cooking the dishes and tasting them afterwards!
